MMA fans are well aware of what UFC President Dana White thinks about teammates refusing to fight one another. For the longest time he gave Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, teammates at the American Kickboxing Academy and top five welterweights, a hard time every time they said they would rather not face one another inside the Octagon.
God only knows how much White enjoyed all the turmoil that was caused when Jackson's MMA light heavyweight studs Jon Jones and Rashad Evans were standing toe-to-toe at UFC 145 last April. The situation caused a rift between the former training partners and friends and saw Evans leave the gym he helped build in search of greener pastures in Florida where he now trains with The Blackzilians.
Since the day Rory MacDonald started making headlines and beating his opponents in devastating fashion, White has made comments regarding the potential match-up between Rory and his Tri-Star teammate and UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. Although both GSP and MacDonald have stated time and time again they would not fight each other that did not deter White from telling fans and media members that once MacDonald saw GSP's bank account, he would quickly change his mind.
A few weeks back we had Rory’s good friend and training partner UFC lightweight Mike Ricci on our show. We asked him what his opinion on what he thought would happen if Georges St. Pierre retained his title against Johny Hendricks and Rory defeated Jake Ellenberger and became the number one contender. Ricci was pretty adamant about the two men not wanting to face one another and also added that GSP would either retire or move up to middleweight before fighting Rory. We posed the same scenario to Rory this past Wednesday night on Alchemist Radio and received an interesting answer.
“Either one of those scenarios would probably make sense,” said MacDonald. “We’ll figure it out when the day comes. We’re not at that bridge yet and we’ll do what we have to do as teammates and figure out what works best. When the time comes we’ll settle the matter inside the gym respectfully.”
While it's far short of him saying he wants to fight GSP, MacDonald didn't dismiss the idea either. Whatever the case may be, both men have huge fights in front of them. If they were to meet in the future I'm sure we would see an exciting fight between two guys laying it all on the line.
